I’am going to show you how i turned a maxi skirt to pants. It has a light cottoned fabric with a really nice print that i liked. I first saw it and thought it looked really nice just as a maxi skirt, but i might not have worn it as much. Luckily, it was big enough to make a pair of pants with. The first idea was to make a sweatpants like style, where you have a band at the bottom, but i then decided to go with palazzo pants. I think it turned out quite well.
I am really trying to train myself on how to cut garments, without using paper patterns (which are great), but not always needed for certain projects. Especially if I’am making clothes just for myself. I used a pair of trousers i already owned as a template.
Below is the fast forward version of how i did it.
Take the maxi skirt and remove the elastic around the waist. Don’t throw it away as you will need it later.
Now lay the maxi skirt on fold twice, and place trouser you already own on top. The side parts of the trouser should be on the part that’s on fold. This is so that we don’t have a seam on the side. You can leave some space on the side if you want it bigger.
Now cut on the side where the crotch is facing, as this is the center. Leave good amount of seam allowance, as the fabric allows.
After this, you now have both the front and back pieces cut. Place the right sides facing each other and stitch along the crotch area of the front and back.
Then turn the pants so that the legs inseams are right sides facing each other. Stitch all round and your now almost done.
Remember the elastic we removed earlier, you now want to measure it round your waist and get the measurement, ten cut it at that point.
Using a safety pin, enter it through the waist tunnel, till it comes out the other end. Now stitch the two elastic ends together. Close the opening of the tunnel.
You just have to iron your newly made palazzo pants, and your completely done. This can take about 30 minutes to do.
Hope you enjoyed this post, and perhaps learnt something new)).
